Once again, French climate activists have smeared art with soup. This time, Claude Monet’s painting ‘Le Printemps’ in a museum in Lyon was targeted. The 1872 canvas is said to have not been damaged, French media report. Recently, the Mona Lisa in the Louvre in Paris was targeted, but the work is protected by glass.

Two activists from the group Riposte Alimentaire threw soup at the Monet in the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon on Saturday afternoon. The activists warned of the consequences of global warming: “This spring is the only one we have left if we do nothing. What will our future artists paint? What will we dream of when there is no more spring?” They were arrested after their action.

The room where the work was exhibited was evacuated after the incident. The rooms with impressionist works will also remain closed on Sunday. The museum will file a complaint against the two women for vandalism. It states that the canvas has been ‘glazed’, and that a report will be made on the current condition of the work. It will be restored on that basis.

The mayor of Lyon, Grégory Doucet, lends his “support to the teams forced to close part of the museum”. Nevertheless, he says that “fear is legitimate, in light of the climate crisis.”
