PARIS – The latest issue of Playboy magazine featuring French Citizenship Minister Marlene Schiappa on the cover, sold out 100,000 copies just hours after hitting newsstands Monday (17/4/2023).

The news was revealed by the magazine’s publisher, Jean-Christophe Florentin, to the media.

“The magazine usually only sells 30,000 issues a month,” Florentin told FranceInfo.

“An additional 60,000 will be printed to meet public demand,” he said.

Public interest in this special issue stems from an extensive interview the minister gave in the magazine about women’s rights and LGBTQ.

Her popularity has also been seen as a public response to criticism by Paris political figures of her appearance in the high-profile magazine, including from Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne.

Borne personally phoned Schiappa to say his appearance in Playboy was “completely inappropriate, especially in this current period,” according to reports in Le Parisien earlier this month.

Borne was referring to the ongoing unrest in France over an unpopular pension reform plan imposed by the government, which has led to months of protests.
