French breakdown meiler stops operating: second reactor in Fessenheim nuclear power plant is shut down – economy

According to the operator, the shutdown of the second reactor in the Fessenheim nuclear power plant has started. The second of the two reactors not far from Freiburg im Breisgau is to be switched off on Tuesday night after 43 years. The majority state-owned operator Electricité de France (EDF) had already taken block one off the grid in February.

French President Emmanuel Macron meets long-standing demands from Germany and Switzerland for the Alsatian nuclear power plant. Both countries were concerned about frequent accidents and the earthquake risk on the Upper Rhine. The shutdown was originally planned for the end of 2016, but the then head of state François Hollande did not keep his promise. (AFP)
