Two dates to immerse yourself in the work of illustrious composers (Schubert, Fauré, Debussy, Lily Boulanger, etc.) thanks to multi-award-winning baritone Stéphane Degout and pianist Cédric Tiberghien: Monday April 3 and Wednesday April 5, it’s in the framework of Park Avenue Armory Recital Series that the two French artists will perform, inaugurating the program of the year of this majestic place located in the Upper East Side, in New York, between 66th and 67th streets.
Renowned for the finesse and sensitivity he conveys in his interpretations, Stéphane Degout has appeared in the greatest opera houses and festivals around the world. He was named “Lyrical Artist of the Year” at the Victoires de la Musique Classique in 2012 and 2019; has two Grammy nominations (best opera recording category, in 2014 and 2019); was voted Musical Personality of the Year by the Professional Association of Theatre, Music and Dance Critics in 2018; and scooped the 2022 International Opera Awards Best Singer of the Year award last year. He will perform a program of French art songs and German lieder (Germanic poems sung by a voice, accompanied by a piano or an instrumental ensemble), which will offer the public the possibility of discovering “the limitless technique and abundant musicality of the baritone”, describes the program for the two evenings. Stéphane Degout had performed at the Met in 2005, as well as in Chicago, but had not returned to the United States for several years.
The opportunity also to let yourself be taken in by the unique atmosphere of the Board of Officers Room of the Park Avenue Armory, which has been the subject of a major renovation, as well as elements of the decor dating of a century and a half than the technical characteristics of the place (acoustics, light). The goal : “Developing natural elements and artificial lighting solutions to create a visual environment conducive to intimate oral and musical performances, while showcasing the meaningful art of the hall’s woodwork”describes the architectural firm PBDW in charge of the restoration.
