French artist Julien Surdeau published “Modifier, “An all-archival short film that condenses a torturous sci-fi storyline and a traveling love story in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Also known as Thirst Bstrd, Julien turned his frustration of being stuck at home into a creative journey to make a short film that unfolds almost exactly like a black man Mirror episode.
Julien, a multidisciplinary artist currently living and working in Paris, said his creative work explores a critical view of social and cultural issues, drawing inspiration from contemporary art and pop culture.
“The starting point was, what if I tell a story that takes place across the world while I’m stuck at home?” “I had wanted to make a real short film for years. The pandemic put out my fire, especially since most of my ideas took place in the UK or the US. I realized that if I wanted to do it anyway, I had to do it myself, at home. “
Julien he said frustration became the root of the plot, with the narrative revolving around the theme of “remembering last year as the best time of my life”.
“I worked on a script that condensed a modern sci-fi script (with a twist), a love story, some of my cinematic influences, and my pandemic mood – all wrapped up in a short film by three minutes. ” .
Julien said using archive footage was the natural fit as he wanted to tell a great story without going out.
He said he recently took a look at the archive videos online and was surprised at the quality of what he found.
Julien said he put aside a few snaps that caught his attention, thinking it would be a big challenge to try and build a story around the archival footage.
“I spent whole days watching archival videos, working to build narrative coherence. I used computer generated vocals to punctuate the edit so that I could rewrite all the time and get a feel for the final cadence. At this point, the story was still evolving according to my findings, ”said Julien.
The film’s script, direction, editing and sound design were all done by Julien. The voice actors were Sammi Price, Bill Mehner and TofuTehSurvivor.
