French Artist Builds Detailed Model of Montagnat Church: A 600-Hour Labor of Love

How did you come up with the idea of building this model?

“When I returned from my journey of several thousand kilometers in France on foot, right at the beginning of the Covid containment period, I took a picture of the Montagnat church which I find beautiful. I am a person with challenges and to pass the time, I asked myself what I could do … without being useful or pathetic. »

“I used a drone to highlight certain points”

How did you build it?

“I went to the town hall to collect floor plans and also took pictures and measurements on site. I also used a drone to highlight certain points. I made plans using the 1/30th scale as a reference. This gives a measurement of 1.10 m long and 1.40 m high. The structure is made of wooden bats on which I attached expanded polystyrene to glue small stones that I broke one by one with pliers. The huts and roofs are made of wood and egg cardboard. For the stained glass windows I used color prints on transparent films. I added interior lighting, and music driven by a computer installed under the model. I have reproduced every detail about this church, as much as I can. »

“I counted 600 hours over sixteen months to complete my model”

How long did it take you to complete this task?

“I counted 600 times over sixteen months to complete my model. I worked on it three hours a day, sometimes a little more like gluing the tiles. In the end, I admit that I was beginning to find the time long. That’s why I like to show it at events like this and I respond as much as possible to requests to travel with it. »

Towards a new challenge

What new challenge did you take on after this one?

“I started a new adventure but after fun and DIY, I started the history of music. Together with my friends, Annie Bonnin on the chromatic box and Michel Beaufet on the diatonic box, we organized a presentation about the history of the box in storytelling and music. We perform regularly in the communities that want us. »
