French Army Denies Request to Use Algerian Airspace for Military Operation in Niger

The French army denied submitting a request related to the use of Algerian airspace in a military operation linked to Niger.

French Army Chief of Staff Thierry Bourcard said, in press statements, that “France did not request the use of Algerian airspace in a military operation in Niger,” without giving further details.

The Algerian state radio, quoting sources it described as confirmed and reliable, said that “military intervention in Niger is imminent, and military arrangements are ready.”

And the sources stated, “Algeria rejected a French request to cross its airspace to intervene militarily in Niger, and its response was strict and clear.”

This comes after the West African Economic Group (ECOWAS) confirmed that the military option to deal with the Niger crisis is still on the table, stressing that the group “will use all available options if it realizes that the coup leaders in Niger are manipulating it,” she said.

On the morning of July 27, military personnel in the Nigerien army announced the dismissal of the country’s president, Mohamed Bazoum, the closure of borders and the imposition of a curfew.
