French amusement park gets off with music by in-house composer De Efteling

An amusement park in Brittany has taken off with music from René Merkelbach, the resident composer of De Efteling. According to the Tilburger, the copy sounds ‘bad’ too.

“I suddenly heard about it on Friday,” Merkelbach says. He is referring to Kingoland. The amusement park reenacted one of his compositions and has since played it for its own visitors. Without notifying the composer.

Flying dutchman
Merkelbach composed the piece of music years ago for the attraction De Vliegende Hollander in the amusement park in Kaatsheuvel. According to him, the recorded French copy is recognizable ‘one-on-one’. “And it sounds bad too.”

Merkelbach calls this ‘not chic’. He has therefore asked the publishing house of De Efteling to act as the entitled party. A spokesperson for De Efteling confirms that request. “We are going to inquire exactly how it works. I cannot say more about that now.”

Disney
“Well, I don’t worry about it”, the Tilburg composer and producer admits. According to him, the results of the compositions are not worth mentioning. “But if De Efteling does nothing, then I ask Buma / Stemra to take action. I am not so silly but the other way around, if I copy music from Disney without being asked, the world would be too small.”
