The 48-year-old opened fire on officers who responded to a report about domestic violence around midnight. A cop was killed, a colleague was injured. The shooter then took refuge in the house and is said to have started a fire there. A woman took refuge on the roof and was later rescued.
After the deadly shooting, emergency services sent reinforcements to the house in a remote hamlet. They also closed roads in the area. The apparently heavily armed perpetrator continued to shoot at police and kill two more officers. Those victims reportedly tried to estimate whether their shot colleagues could be saved.
The shooter was eventually able to flee. Minister Darmanin did not go into detail about the circumstances under which he subsequently died. An initiate says the man was found dead in a vehicle. It is suspected that he took his own life. The rescued woman is still being questioned.
President Emmanuel Macron has expressed his condolences to the French police. “They are our heroes,” he wrote on Twitter. The killed officers were 21, 37 and 45 years old.
