French actor and director Jean François Stévenin has died aged 77. His family has reported this to the AFP news agency. He has starred in more than 150 films since 1968.

Stévenin has directed three films that are considered cult films: “Passe montagne”, Doubles messieurs” and “Mischka”. He also starred in films by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard (“Passion”), François Truffaut (“L’argent de poche”), Jacques Demy (“Une chambre en Ville”), Christophe Gans (“Le pacte des loups” ) and Patrice Lecompte (“L’homme du train”). His latest film, “Illusions perdues” by Xavier Giannoli, will be presented at the Venice Film Festival in the fall.
More or less by accident, Stevenin became a sought-after actor after years as an assistant to directors Alain Cavalier and Jacques Rivette, and he suddenly landed a part because his appearance would suit the role in the film. By the way, he discovered the world of film during an internship in Cuba on milk production.
Stévenin has four children, Sagamore, Robinson, Salomé and Pierre, all of whom went on to become actors.
