The Intercommunal Hospital Center (CHI) of Fréjus-Saint-Raphaël in the Var has decided to launch its 1st private fundraiser. He hopes to raise 200,000 euros to equip himself with “Drugcam”, an innovative device for monitoring drugs against cancer.
For several years, the Var hospital center has spontaneously received support from individuals, companies and even associations.
A first private fundraising campaign
A generosity which was confirmed during the first health wave of Covid-19, in 2020. During this period, Frejus-Saint-Raphaël hospital receives several private financial supports to help it get through this crisis.
Faced with this situation, the CHI decided to go further, and to officially launch a collection of donations in a structured and professional manner, reaching out to individuals.
The sums collected will come in addition to the public endowments of the Var establishment.
Other large structures do it, such as the Fondation de France, for example. For us, what is new is to target a project of this scale,
explains Martine Dufavet, CHI communications officer.
Objective 200,000 euros
With an already stated objective: to collect 200,000 euros to finance the installation of a “Drugcam” in its chemotherapy preparation room. A first step which is part of the complete renovation of the hospital’s clean room, the work of which should reach 800,000 euros.

The choice of this program was decided internally, in agreement with healthcare professionals. ” We discussed with the care services to define an ambitious fundraising strategy over the next few years, and thus bring out the projects. It also aims to give the professionals of our hospital the chance to see a motivating and innovative project come to fruition. “Explains in a press release Rachel Juif-Arenillas, deputy director in charge of the finances of the hospital.
State-of-the-art technology and artificial intelligence
This project is intended for the pharmacy of the Fréjus-Saint-Raphaël hospital, for its four cytotoxics reconstitution stations, the activity of which in 2021 amounted to nearly 12,000 preparations.

Because the “Drugcam” is a device that makes the preparation and control of injectable cancer drugs even more secure. It is an advanced video assistance system for the constitution of drug batches, which uses artificial intelligence.
“It’s real-time monitoring, additional security for pharmacy preparers“says Martine Dufavet.
It is already used in several centers specializing in the fight against cancer, such as the Paul Strauss Center in Strasbourg since 2018.
4 cameras to help pharmacists
It is an innovative technological process, which assists and controls the preparation of drugs in real time. A camera system is placed outside the work plan and allows:
– Recognition of objects used during preparation (vials, syringes, labels, etc.)
– The complete video recording of the production, an element of legal security with the value of forensic evidence (data archiving).
A device recently implemented at the Castellucio hospital in Ajaccio, as shown by this report from our colleagues from France3 Corse.

A first in the Var
The money collected should make it possible to finance the entirety of this system, which should be put in place in the second half of 2022.
« Generosity remains at a high level in France, it is now up to us to join this movement and strengthen this positive dynamic “, hopes Doctor Jean-Marc Maurin, president of the medical commission of the establishment.
If this campaign is successful, the CHI Fréjus Saint-Raphaël pharmacy will be the first in the Var to benefit from this cutting-edge technology for the benefit of oncology patients.
