Freizeit – Düsseldorf – youth hostels look hopefully to the summer society

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) – In summer, most of the youth hostels in North Rhine-Westphalia will be open again. According to their association, the 33 youth hostels in the Rhineland want to receive guests again during the holidays, with a few exceptions. The Landesverband Westfalen-Lippe announced that they want to open all of their houses again by the start of the new school year.

After months of forced Corona break, the youth hostels are hopeful about the coming weeks. “We are in good spirits,” said Annette Rath, spokeswoman for the Rhineland Youth Hostel Association. Since tourist offers are possible again, the demand has increased strongly, “happily also for our children and youth trips”.

The regional association Westphalia-Lippe also reports of a successful restart. “Our youth hostels were well booked over the long weekends, mainly families were and are our guests and are looking forward to a break after the strenuous lockdown with homeschooling, home office and Co.”, said spokeswoman Maike Braun. In June, most hostels are only open on weekends.

As in the previous summer, it is becoming noticeable that families are considering vacationing on their doorstep more often than before. Corona-compatible forms of vacation such as cycling tours also bring guests to the hostels. “We are registering a significant increase in bookings for the summer,” said Rath. But there is still free capacity. Many families probably rely on short-term bookings. “As a result, unfortunately, some holiday offers are on the brink because there are still too few interested parties, but we will soon have to decide whether they will take place or not,” said Rath.

The most important business area – school trips and group trips – is still idle: “We miss the school trips,” said Rath. Here, a clear regulation is needed promptly as to what is possible again under which conditions. “We hope that the schools will be able to drive again after the holidays,” said Braun. Many schools would have kept their booking for the time after the summer vacation. The school ministry in North Rhine-Westphalia had banned class trips due to the pandemic-related uncertainties until July 5th.
