Freight Train Stuck on Busiest Train Route in Norway Due to Snow – Over 12-Hour Delay for Passengers

“There’s always a train” was the name of an episode of Fleksnes. That was not the case on the busiest train route in Norway, on the night of Thursday.

It was because a freight train got stuck between Myrdal and Hallingskeid.

Bane Nor said the weather was the reason for the train stop. In the hours since the goods train stopped, the snow has created new problems.

The one passenger train, going to Oslo, was stuck at Myrdal for a long time. There are around 300 passengers on board. This has been quiet since 01.30.

There are around 180 passengers on the second passenger train, which is going to Bergen. This is now on Haugastøl.

Snow blowers to the rescue

Just after 06.30 today early, Olav Nordli, press officer at Bane Nor, was able to tell NRK that the train would hopefully be able to move again soon.

At Ustaoset, there is work outside the train wind eye.

– The goods train that was stuck on the Bergen Railway has entered Myrdal. Now the big snowblower is plowing. It will lead the night train from Bergen to Oslo over the mountain.

In the meantime, the train to Bergen must wait for the section to be cleared, and for the train from Oslo to pass.

Nordli thinks it will be close to 9 before the train to Oslo has come over the mountain. Only then can the westbound train move towards Bergen.

Water and snacks have been laid out for the passengers to help themselves to on the train that is on its way to Bergen.

Over 12 hours from west to east

On Vy’s website it says just before 07.30 that the train to Oslo should arrive in Oslo at 11.27. It will probably take a bit more time than this.

The train was actually supposed to arrive at 06.27. This means that the trip over the mountain will take at least 12.5 hours.

The train to Bergen should have had the same arrival time. There, one passenger has been given an estimate of 12.15 as likely.

– There is a lot of snow and wind, and I hope it goes well with the current plan, says Nordli.

On board there should still be a “good atmosphere”, according to Vy.

Hot passengers

Press officer Kaja Rynning Moen says that the conductors go back and forth in the carriages to share information.

In addition, they offer water and the food they are able to give out.

It has been hot on the train the whole time, and many of the passengers were still asleep when NRK spoke to Moen shortly after 6 o’clock.

– It was not considered to evacuate the train, it is better to sit there and wait until it opens, says Moen.

NRK has been in contact with Clarence Ching. He is on the train to Bergen and travels in a sleeping compartment.

Ching confirms what Moen says. He also says that the temperature is good, the restaurant is open, and that the train is quiet and peaceful.

– There is no chaos, and most people are asleep, he says.

Clarence Ching has bought himself breakfast in the restaurant which is open.
