Freight Train Derails in Upstate New York, Disrupting Amtrak Service

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (AP) — A freight train derailed in upstate New York Friday, disrupting Amtrak passenger service and prompting authorities to close area roads.

About 17 cars of a CSX train carrying various cargoes derailed shortly before 8 a.m. northwest of Albany, a CSX spokesperson said in a statement.

No one was injured and there are no signs of leaks, the company reported.

Montgomery County Deputy Sheriff Carl Rust said most of the railcars that derailed were oil tankers.

“Nothing to the eye is leaking from these tank cars,” Rust told a news conference in the town of Amsterdam, near the site of the derailment.

A spokesman for Amtrak, which shares tracks with CSX, said all service west of Albany was suspended Friday. Amtrak was looking to provide alternate transportation for passengers, spokesman Jason Abrams said.

The service suspension affects passengers heading to Buffalo and Niagara Falls. State Highway 5 was closed at the scene of the incident.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said state personnel were assisting local emergency responders.

“Our top priority is to ensure that all nearby railroad employees and drivers are safe and that Amtrak service resumes as quickly as possible,” Hochul said in a statement.

The cause of the derailment is being investigated. On Thursday a passenger train derailed in New York City. Authorities said 13 people were injured in the Long Island Rail Road derailment near the Jamaica station.
