Freiburg’s dribbler Roland Sallai – football

Roland Sallai has played for SC Freiburg since 2018. The 23-year-old has now arrived in Breisgau and is currently playing the best season of his career.

Roland Sallai is a quiet fellow outside of the field. Always friendly, always polite. A modest guy who is incredibly ambitious and hardworking at the same time. His knowledge of German is now really good, and things like that are important to the 23-year-old in order to arrive in a foreign country and at a new club as quickly as possible.

Difficult start

The native of Budapest is much more emotional on the pitch. This is also reflected in his game. Fast turns in a tight space, more hectic than calm, nimble and unpredictable, incredibly dribbling, but also like to try to go 1 against 3 and fail. Roland Sallai made a great development under coach Christian Streich, but it took a long time. “I talked to him a lot. It took a long time to get him stable. It was difficult to get started, injuries again and again. Since he’s a very emotional player, that always bothered him. But his development is great. Now he has much more calm on the ball, sometimes goes the easy way and that’s why his game is much better now than before. I’m very satisfied! “

International way in his career

Roland Sallai spent his youth in Hungary. But at the age of 19 he was loaned to Palermo by his club Puskás Akadémia FC in Sicily. After a year, the young dribbler went to Cyprus to APOEL Nicosia. A year later, SC Freiburg brought him and not only offered him a future on the pitch, but also gave him a new home. “He has now found something like a second home. He’s also had a lot of bad experiences. Even when he was young, he traveled a lot in Europe,” says Christian Streich.

Grown on my heart

Roland Sallai has played in all of Hungary’s national teams since the U15. In 2016 he made his debut in Hungary’s senior national team. He is a highly gifted player with an incredible amount of potential. But he’s also a player who keeps struggling with injuries. Regardless of whether it is the adductors or, more recently, the capsule in the ankle. These constant setbacks bother him. He played a great game against Frankfurt, scored with a remarkable lifter to equalize 1: 1 in the meantime, but had to be replaced because he was injured and twisted on his opponent’s foot. It will probably not be enough for a use against the Swabian neighbor VfB Stuttgart. It’s a shame, because with five goals he is one of the best scorer in the Freiburg team. However, he is now so mentally stable that he knows that he will soon have his place in the team again, because his coach is also very fond of him. “He’s really good! I’m a real friend of Roland Sallai and I really hope that we can continue to work together for a long time.”
