On Easter Saturday, Eintracht from Frankfurt and the Sport-Club from Freiburg faced each other in the first semi-final meeting for entry into this year’s DFB Cup final. In wonderful football weather, referee Kathrin Heimann whistled punctually at 1 p.m. for the game between the direct neighbors of the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga, which was eagerly awaited by many. Unfortunately, due to the current situation in connection with the corona pandemic, spectators were still not allowed in the Frankfurt stadium at the Brentanobad.

After both teams successfully completed their previous league games – Frankfurt defeated MSV Duisburg 3-0 last Thursday and the sports club prevailed 1-0 against Turbine Potsdam in their home game on Sunday – they were allowed to play with two self-confident semi-finalists who wanted to take the last step towards the finale in Cologne.

Freiburg coach Daniel Kraus changed his starting eleven from the game against Turbine to two positions and started the game with a 4-3-3. For Mia Büchele and Tyara Buser, Samantha Steuerwald, who surprisingly ran into the center forward position, and Marie Müller were on the field from the start.

Frankfurt got off to a better start in the game and immediately put the SC defensive under pressure. So it only took five minutes until the first big opportunity for unity. After a nice pass from Lara Prasnikar, Sjoeke Nüsken appeared completely alone in front of the SC case. The hurrying out Lena Nuding skillfully shortened the angle and with a reflex prevented the early lead for the eagle wearers.
In the middle of the initial phase determined by the landlords, then out of the blue the cold shower for the team of Frankfurt coach Nikolaos Arnautis. A dream pass from Rebecca Knaak over half the field lands precisely at Marie Müller. This did not hesitate and hammered the play equipment into the mesh to lead the sports club 1-0. The ex-Freiburg native Merle Frohms in the box of the SGE was without a chance.

Then luck for the sports club, which had survived the early pressure phase of the Frankfurt women well, in the 24th minute: Laura Freilang prevailed on the right corner of the penalty area and took off from a promising position. Her full right-hand shot only landed on the crossbar of the SC case. In the meantime, the encounter had developed into the cup fight between two teams at eye level, which many had expected in advance.

The angry Hessians tried everything to achieve the desired equalizer before the change, but the well-organized defense of the Kraus-Elf continued to withstand the attacks. Shortly before the half-time whistle, the second very good opportunity for the sports club to score. Ereleta Memeti ran away from all her guards coming from midfield, but her graduation only clapped on the right outer post of Merle Frohms’ box. So it went with the bottom line not undeserved tour for the guests from the Breisgau in the cabins.

Both teams came out of the half-time break unchanged. Eintracht got off to a dream start shortly after the restart. After Lena Nuding was able to steer a ball over the crossbar from close range in the 46th minute, she was defeated only one minute later. Frankfurt striker Lara Prasnikar, who lurking at the near post, had no problems scoring the 1-1 goal for the hosts, found a corner kick from the left.
Frankfurt’s tireless approach should be rewarded a second time in the 64th minute. At first, SC final woman Lena Nuding reacted excellently to Laura Feiersinger’s direct acceptance, but she was powerless against the placed finish from the second row by Camilla Küver and had to watch as the ball from 20 meters away from the goal made the way to the 2-1 lead found the Frankfurt women at right angles.
The sports club reacted and tried to take the offensive again in the last quarter of an hour. The ball ran well up to Merle Frohms’s penalty area, but the last ball just didn’t want to find its target. The harmony was now lower and only sporadically put single needle pricks in the direction of the SC case.
In the end, neither of the two teams managed to put anything on the scoreboard in the last quarter of an hour and it remained with the narrow 2-1 home win of the Frankfurt women, who thus book the tickets for the final in Cologne.

Voices for the game:
SC trainer Daniel Kraus: “I can’t blame my team. In the end, experience was the decisive factor for victory. We have to learn from this, even if it is of course really very bitter. “

SC manager Birgit Bauer: “Anyone who, like me and some of the players, has already been able to experience a final for the DFB-Pokal, can certainly understand that it is a painful defeat and that we are all very disappointed at the moment that we were eliminated in the semi-finals. “

Captain Rebecca Knaak: “It just hurts a lot. We were so looking forward to this game and opportunity. We know what it means to be in the final and that dream fell through today. We’ll work through that as a team and then we’ll try to achieve it again at some point. It was a hard-fought game and in the end Frankfurt scored that one more goal. “
