In June 2023, the Freiburg voters approved the loan of 65.5 million francs for the move and the associated renovation of the armory for the Freiburg Natural History Museum (NHMF). The preparations for the moving work can now begin.
Whales and bison are not easy to control
The start of the renovation of the old armory on the Route des Arsenaux began last September. Planning is also underway to move the many exhibits from the current NHMF to the future location. Some large specimens from the collection pose some problems for the employees, says the director of the Freiburg Natural History Museum, Peter Wandeler:
The whale will be a major operation. We have to make a hole in the facade so we can get the skeleton out.
In the new museum, the whale will then be brought back into the museum through an enlarged window or a hole in the wall before the wall is finally closed, Peter Wandeler added. The bison is also not easy to move. “Eight employees lifted the bison to the third floor because we don’t yet have a goods lift.” But one of these will be available at the new location. “I’m really looking forward to it,” the director continues.

The further stages until the opening
Moving the whale, as described above, will be the first major hurdle in reining it in. This major task should be completed in 2026. The permanent exhibition will be set up from June 2027. The end of the renovations of the old armory, which will be converted into the new Natural History Museum, is scheduled for December 2027. Further work on all of the exhibits will be carried out throughout 2027.
In May 2028, the Freiburg Natural History Museum on Museumsweg in Pérolles will be closed so that the final work can be completed for the reopening at the new location. The opening of the new NHMF in the old armory on the Route des Arsenaux is scheduled for December 2028.
