Two cases with the South African variant of the corona virus were detected in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. Virologist Marcus Panning assesses the danger of the mutation.
BZ: The South African variant B.1.351 of the coronavirus has been detected in two cases in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. How worried you are?
Panning: It was to be expected that we would also see this variant in southern Baden. The first cases in Germany in December and January involved a trip. They were people who came from South Africa and brought the variant with them. In the meantime, it is no longer possible to reconstruct in all cases where the people were infected. If we look to Tyrol, there is a widespread occurrence of this variant. So it’s not surprising that she’s with us now.
Current share: In Baden-Württemberg, 4266 cases with mutated coronaviruses have officially become known. In 3390 of these it is known which variant it is: 3228 times the British mutant B.1.1.7 was detected, 157 times the South African B.1.351.
