The “new encyclical on fraternity and social friendship” published by Pope Francis will be discussed online by the Freiburg social ethicist Ursula Nothelle-Wildfeuer and the Siegen economist Nils Goldschmidt on Wednesday, December 2nd at 7 pm. In the encyclical, Pope Francis criticizes an economic system that is only oriented towards profit and growth and the populist political style that prevails in many countries around the world, which primarily focuses on national interests and refuses to meet the demands of the global common good. The Covid-19 pandemic not only revealed false securities, but also, according to Francis, the “inability to act together”.
