By signing a “voluntary commitment for climate protection and sustainable business”, the Sparkasse Freiburg-Nördlicher Breisgau supports the goals of the Paris climate protection agreement and intensifies its activities for more sustainability.
The Sparkasse Freiburg-Nördlicher Breisgau is intensifying its activities for more sustainability and is stating this in a voluntary commitment. In this, the Sparkasse undertakes to make its business operations CO2-neutral by 2035, to align financings and own investments with climate targets and to support commercial and private customers in the transformation to a climate-friendly economy. “We want to firmly anchor sustainability as a further requirement for our business activities. We want our customers to know that they are getting offers for sustainable investments and financing from their Sparkasse. The savings bank itself will also become more sustainable. We can and want to make our contribution to the achievement of the Paris climate targets in business operations and also in our core business! ”, Says CEO Marcel Thimm.
The starting point of the voluntary commitment is the Paris Climate Protection Agreement. In this, states around the world set themselves the goal of limiting global warming to “well below” two degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial age – if possible even to 1.5 degrees Celsius. “Out of social responsibility and with regard to the livelihoods of future generations, we have to protect the ecological basis of our coexistence.” Says Thimm.
The concept of sustainability is already laid out in the history of the Sparkasse’s origins, with the principle of a business policy geared towards the common good and not maximizing profit and the mandate to supply people and companies in the business area with banking services. In future, the focus will be more on climate change and its consequences for people and the economy. Measures already implemented to optimize resource consumption, e.g. B. Energy and paper, the construction and modernization of buildings and the renewal of the vehicle fleet must be increased in order to further reduce CO2 emissions. The Sparkasse already provides help for its customers through advice and the active involvement of public funding programs with a focus on sustainability for building owners and companies.
“In addition, our clients can actually do something by taking sustainable securities from our portfolio into account in their investment decisions and thus strengthening the sustainable development of the economy. Our client advisors have recently been qualified in this regard and are already asking about the client’s interest in sustainable investments in every investment advisory meeting, ”says Thimm.
The chairman of the administrative board of the Sparkasse, Lord Mayor Martin Horn, welcomed the initiative of the board of directors and affirmed: “A good balance of ecological, social and entrepreneurial sustainability is a core element of the Sparkasse’s business policy. In this way we actively support the city and region’s climate goals. “
