Freiburg (dpa/lsw) – In the debate about unaccompanied minor refugees in the southwest, Freiburg’s mayor Martin Horn continues to advocate for quick solutions. The nationwide distribution of these young refugees, which is now underway, is helping the municipalities, said the non-party town hall boss of the German Press Agency in Freiburg. “But we also need fast and efficient distribution management.”
Because more and more minors are fleeing to Baden-Württemberg, the major cities of Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Mannheim as well as several districts contacted Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) directly at the end of September. Without help from Stuttgart, emergency accommodation for these children and young people cannot be secured permanently, the fire letter said.
“There was a quick response from the Ministry of Social Affairs, and we are grateful for that,” summarized Horn. Quick solutions are needed. “In the summer months, more unaccompanied minor foreigners arrived in Freiburg than ever before.”
Regarding the desired improvements, the Ministry of Social Affairs announced at the end of September that there would be more places in the future to medically determine the age of young refugees. This should shorten waiting times and processes.
According to the current legal situation, unaccompanied foreign minors are assigned to a youth welfare office, taken into care there and handed over to a specialist. Due to a lack of staff, many cities and districts are overwhelmed, said the President of the Baden-Württemberg Association of Cities, Karlsruhe Mayor Frank Mentrup (SPD).
