Freiburg: Labor market in September: Restrained autumn recovery – 16,703 men and women in the agency district without work – unemployment rate at 4.5 percent

For the first time since the beginning of the Corona crisis, the number of unemployed in the district of the Freiburg Employment Agency has fallen again. In the city of Freiburg and the districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and Emmendingen, a total of 16,703 women and men were unemployed on the reporting date, 374 fewer than a month earlier. The unemployment rate fell by 0.1 points to 4.5 percent, and that of youth unemployment by 0.3 points to 3.6 percent. At the start of the autumn season, the decline in unemployed was comparatively moderate. That is why the increase on the same month last year has increased slightly compared to August.

“After a long period of time we are seeing a decline in unemployment. Although the typical seasonal relief is somewhat lower than in previous years, it cannot be overlooked. I’m happy about that, ”says the chairman of the management board of the Freiburg Employment Agency, Andreas Finke. The start of the season was particularly noticeable in the catering, logistics and retail professions. In jobs in the metalworking industry, on the other hand, the autumn upswing has not yet arrived, at least on the labor market. As expected, young people and teachers benefited from the start of school. This trend will repeat itself again in the coming month due to the start of studies at many universities. After the demand for labor has risen for four months in a row, the figures there are again somewhat more moderate. Temporary employment and the manufacturing sector in particular reported fewer jobs. “All in all, the trend is right. I am confident for the months ahead. However, the structural problems in parts of the automotive industry are increasingly making themselves felt on the labor market. And the Corona crisis remains the sword of Damocles for the time being, which hovers over the current recovery, “says Finke.

Short-time work
In the seventh month of the pandemic, another 24 notifications were received for a total of 242 people. The newly announced short-time work is thus approaching the level before the Corona crisis.

The first projections for short-time work actually used in May 2020 are now available for the agency district. Accordingly, 5,015 companies settled short-time work for a total of 47,026 employees.
