Freiburg: Labor market in February: positive trend continues – 13,110 men and women in the agency district without work – unemployment rate at 3.5 percent

The number of unemployed in the district of the Freiburg Employment Agency fell in February. On the reporting date, a total of 13,110 women and men were unemployed in the city of Freiburg and the districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and Emmendingen. That is 423 fewer than a month earlier. The unemployment rate is now 3.5 percent. For women and men under the age of 25, the rate remains unchanged at 2.2 percent. It was the largest drop in a month in February in the past 20 years.

“The labor market is still on the upswing. I’m surprised at the extent of the decline. He turned out stronger than usual. I’m happy about that,” says Andreas Finke, CEO of the Freiburg Employment Agency. It is also pleasing that the long-term unemployed have again benefited from the positive development. “The upswing is finally reaching them too,” says Finke, considering that their number has fallen by more than eleven percent within a year. The positive trend on the labor market is also confirmed by the demand for labour. The manufacturing industry reported job vacancies at a record level. Demand also increased in other areas, above all in health and social services, in trade and in public administration. Filling them becomes a challenge because they are almost exclusively looking for skilled workers (87 percent). “We must do everything we can to make people more willing to learn and help them to put learning into practice. In doing so, we not only keep an eye on the unemployed, but also employees as a preventative measure,” says Finke, pointing out that one in five employees in the agency district does not have a professional qualification or at least cannot prove it. From month to month it is becoming more and more apparent that shortages of skilled workers will dominate the challenges on the labor market.

short-time work

For a long time they had not benefited from the economic recovery. The demand for labor is at a high level. The companies reported 1,561 job vacancies. That is 575 or 58.3 percent more than in January and 425 or 37.4 percent more than a year ago.
