Freiburg: Ice hockey: EHC Freiburg goalkeeper trio stands for the coming season – Benzing and Hempel complete the “goalie” team – Hartigan works as goalkeeper coach

The goalkeeper trio of the EHC Freiburg stands for the coming season in the second highest German ice hockey league (DEL 2). With Luis Benzing and Maurice Hempel, the team around DEL newcomer Patrik Cerveny is complete.

The 21-year-old Luis Benzing is going into his third season with the wolves. As a native of Schwenninger, Benzing went through all the offspring of the Wild Wings and met the Wolves in Breisgau for the first time in the 2019/20 season. It was here that he made his first appearance in the senior division, while he was mainly guarding the goal of the U20s and was able to show the second best goal against goal in the entire league. The left catcher was also part of the wolf pack last season and was able to celebrate his debut in the Penny DEL after the regular keeper from Schwenningen failed. In his two top division games he convinced with an impressive catch rate of 92.3%. Luis Benzing will now also wear the EHC Freiburg jersey in the coming season.

A new addition is Maurice Hempel, the third goalkeeper in this league. In the past season, the home-grown Wölfe offspring was licensed as a standby goalie before the playoffs and will now join the Breisgau squad for the 2021/22 DEL2 season.

Jack Hartigan, the previous assistant coach of the Wolves, will no longer accompany EHC Freiburg in this role in the coming season. As in the 2019/20 season, Hartigan will remain with the coaching team as goalkeeping coach. With his ice hockey expertise and many years of experience as a goalkeeper coach, he will play a central role in the development of the young goalkeeper trio.
