Looking over the shoulder of the restorer: Starting today, Thursday, this will be possible for visitors to the Augustinermuseum. Isabelle Rippmann, restorer of paintings and sculptures, will devote herself to a large-format urban plan of the city of Freiburg from the 17th century in a specially set up restoration workshop in the Kaiserfenster foyer.
The so-called “Korntawerplan” is named after its creator, the cartographer Job Korntawer. It is painted with oil paint on a textile surface and is over 4.50 meters long. Korntawer made it in 1607 on behalf of the mayor and council of the city of Freiburg. The plan shows the former municipal court and ban districts. A projector presentation in the museum gives the audience an insight into the structure of the workshop. It provides information about the restoration project and the history of the city map.
Isabelle Rippmann works on the plan Tuesday through Friday during the museum’s opening hours – but not continuously. From July 1st, she will be supported by another restorer. If you want to be sure to find Isabelle Rippmann at work, you should inquire about the current times at [email protected].
After the restoration is complete, the plan can be seen in the new exhibition rooms of the Augustinian Museum from 2023. After completing their work, the restorers can take the painting to its future exhibition location from the imperial window foyer without having to unroll it again. The new rooms in the former convent building can be reached directly via a connecting door. Visitors will find the map there as a central piece of the permanent exhibition on the city’s history.
The restoration is supported by the Leica company, which is providing the museum with a microscope. A copy of the plan from the early 20th century can be seen in the Meckel-Halle in the main office of the Sparkasse Freiburg-Nördlicher Breisgau.
Restoration of the Korntawer plan:
For decades the plan had been rolled up on a roll and stored in the depot of the Augustinian Museum. When it was to be exhibited in 1995 for the anniversary exhibition “875 Years of Freiburg”, it turned out that it was in a worrying condition due to the long and unfavorable storage.
At that time, there were only six months left to prepare the painting for the exhibition. So you limited yourself to stabilizing the canvas, leveling it and securing the paint layer. In October 1995 the city map could be presented in an intermediate state. Then it was returned to the depot, where it has been stored until today, extensive restoration.
In the course of her work on the plan, Isabelle Rippmann will remove previous overpaintings that have since changed significantly in color. It will also remove the old varnishes, originally colorless protective layers that have yellowed over the centuries, and replace them with new ones. As a result, the original layer of paint underneath becomes visible and perceptible as such. The countless flaws that have arisen over a long period of time are cemented and retouched in order to give the painting a closed, calm appearance.
