Freiburg: From July 12th: The gatekeeper traffic light at the Kappler Tunnel in Freiburg will be replaced – installation of an automated system with traffic jam detectors

Since October last year, a semi-automatic porter traffic light has been controlling traffic in front of the Kappler Tunnel in order to prevent longer traffic jams in the Schützenallee Tunnel, which is closer to the city. This was necessary because the tunnels no longer meet the necessary fire protection requirements. From Tuesday, July 12th to Friday, July 29th, the garden and civil engineering office (GuT) will replace the gatekeeper system. For the work, the lanes must be reduced alternately. Therefore, traffic disruptions are to be expected.

In consultation with the regional council and the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district office, the GuT is installing an automated system with traffic jam detectors. Sensors in the tunnel and at the tunnel exit detect stationary vehicles and calculate the likelihood of traffic jams. If no timely congestion resolution is to be expected, inflow dosing is activated. Scoreboards reduce the speed and indicate block processing. Two traffic lights then stop traffic for an average of 60 seconds. In order to prevent alternative traffic through Littenweiler, the system will be moved in front of the exit at the Kappler junction.

The last few months have shown that block handling was necessary between 13 and 31 times a month. Sometimes a few minutes of gatekeeping was enough to prevent a traffic jam in the tunnel. Studies show that there were no significant delays into the city due to block handling. Occasional accidents or demonstrations, which often obstructed traffic for hours in the east of Freiburg, were not included.

As things stand at present, block handling must remain in operation until the technical facilities in the tunnel have been renewed. The regional council plans to start construction in 2027.

The GuT asks all road users for their understanding for the necessary work.
