At the home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach, SC Freiburg is organizing a campaign match day for the first time to draw lasting attention to the topic of inclusion. The sports club works together with eight cooperation partners.
Barrier-free stadium access to all four stands. 144 wheelchair spaces. A “toilet for everyone”. Seats for the hard of hearing and a barrier-free fan radio. When building the new Europa-Park stadium, SC Freiburg made it its task to enable as many disabled people as possible of all kinds to have a real leisure time experience.
Aside from visiting the stadium, the sports club has also been supporting people with disabilities for years, for example in the form of exercise and sports offers as part of its social commitment. Children and young people with disabilities can also take part in many of the events that SC Freiburg offers as part of its membership offerings. For example at the 25 Füchsle camps that the sports club organizes every year, or at the weekly Füchsle ball schools, funino clubs and the mini ball school. Since the 2021/22 season, there has also been a Füchsle Ball School every Wednesday in the Mooswald School Special Education and Counseling Center (SBBZ) and the Adolf-Reichwein Bildungshaus in Weingarten. In addition, the sports club, which is also part of the “Inclusion and Sport Freiburg” network, is working together with the South Baden Football Association (SBFV) on the introduction of an inclusion league.
In the home game against Borussia Mönchengladbach, SC Freiburg now want to go one step further and have set up their own inclusion match day for the first time. “With the promotional game day, we want to use various larger and smaller measures to draw attention to the topic of ‘inclusion and sport’ and sensitize the public to the important topic,” explains Tobias Rauber, who, as head of the area of social commitment, is also the project manager for the “Inclusion Game Day “ has.
In order to be able to credibly and authentically address the topic of inclusion as part of a promotional game day, the sports club included eight cooperation partners (see list below), all of whom have a connection to the topic of inclusion and SC Freiburg, in the planning and helped to develop ideas and integrated them into the most diverse areas and processes of the Bundesliga match day against Borussia Mönchengladbach. On Saturday, for example, trained service staff from the inclusion company Hofgut Himmelreich will be working in the business area of the Europa-Park stadium. The “Heimspiel” vendors in front of and in the stadium are supplemented by disabled helpers from Caritas and Reha-Südwest. The same applies to the many volunteers on the day of the match, who are supported on Saturday by helpers from the Freiburg Inclusion and Sport Network.
For the first time since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, the players of both teams will also be accompanied onto the pitch by children: 25 pupils from the Mooswald School will stand guard between the players’ tunnel and the lawn and thus experience a very special moment.
In order to give disabled people access and enthusiasm for football and SC Freiburg, facilities for people with disabilities can also apply for a free tour of the Europa-Park stadium via the SC channels. The application deadline is May 31, 2022.
In order to give the topic of inclusion a media platform, stadium moderator Stefan Mayer had the disabled Max Gräßlin, coach of a Füchsle ball school of the SC, and the disabled Arno Becker from the wheelchair fan club Breisgauflitzer as guests this time in the video format “Platzrunde”. The report can be seen around the day of the match both on the SC website and on the Sport-Club’s social media channels and will also be shown on the video walls of the Europa-Park stadium on Saturday. Before the game against Gladbach, stadium moderator Mayer will also be present in the stadium support program Florian Kiuppis from the network inclusion and sport Freiburg, Patrick Moran (inclusion officer of the South Baden Football Association) and
Boris Gourdial (Head of the Social Affairs Office of the City of Freiburg) for an interview and talk to them about inclusion and sport.
“Hopefully, the measures that we will implement on Saturday on our first inclusion match day are just the beginning,” says Tobias Rauber from the sports club, who thanks all cooperation partners and all SC employees who support the match day. Rauber knows that the Sport-Club and its cooperation partners already have a number of other ideas for future cooperation – even outside of a campaign match day. As a first step, they want to sit down after the game and draw a conclusion on SC Freiburg’s first inclusion matchday. “Because for us as a club,” Rauber knows, “such a promotional game day is an excellent opportunity to test how we can implement the topic of inclusion in game day processes and in our internal structures even better.
