The Freiburg region (the city of Freiburg and the two districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and Emmendingen) as the German side of the common Eurodistrict Region Freiburg – Center et Sud Alsace is unfortunately one of the areas most affected by Covid-19 in Germany. A total of over 2,500 Covid infections were found in our room. The development was particularly dramatic in the French part of our Eurodistrict, which, like all of Alsace, was classified by the Robert Koch Institute as a high-risk area. In the past two weeks, the situation in the entire Eurodistrict has relaxed considerably. In the Freiburg region, the number of new infections has decreased noticeably, and we can also look forward to a similar development in Alsace. The RKI has now withdrawn the classification of Alsace as a high-risk area.

As President of the Eurodistrict, District Administrator Hanno Hurth took this encouraging development as an opportunity to ask State Secretary Engelke in the Federal Ministry of the Interior for a benevolent check for a controlled opening of the so-called smaller border crossings in our region. Specifically, it is about the Neuenburg / Chalampé and Sasbach / Marckolsheim border crossings. The closure of these two crossings creates considerable detours for numerous employees who live in Alsace and work in southern Baden. Last but not least, this leads to traffic jams and disabilities at the currently open border crossings. A controlled opening of the two border crossings could bring a significant relaxation for everyone involved.

+++ Letter to State Secretary Engelke in the Federal Ministry of the Interior:

Dear State Secretary Engelke,

In the video conference of the German-French Committee for Cross-Border Cooperation on April 23, we discussed intensively the topic of border closures and border openings. I would like to expressly emphasize that I think the decision of the Federal Government to partially close the borders between France and Germany or to introduce border controls is correct. Corresponding demands were made to politicians from the southern Baden area in early March.

The Freiburg region (the city of Freiburg and the two districts of Emmendingen and Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald) and thus the German part of the common Eurodistrictes Region Freiburg – Center et Sud Alsace is unfortunately one of the areas most affected by Covid-19 in Germany. A total of over 2,500 Covid infections were found in our room. The development was particularly dramatic in the French part of our Eurodistrict, which, like the entire Elass, was classified by the Robert Koch Institute as a high-risk area.

Fortunately, the situation in the entire Eurodistrict has relaxed considerably in the past two weeks. In the Freiburg region, the number of new infections has decreased noticeably, and we can also look forward to a similar development in Alsace. The RKI has now withdrawn the classification of Alsace as a high-risk area.

Dear State Secretary Engelke, I would like to take this encouraging development as an opportunity to ask you for the Eurodistrict Region Freiburg – Center et Sud Alsace to consider benevolently the opening of the so-called smaller border crossings in our region.

The ladies and gentlemen Dr. Fechner, Dr. Hoffmann, Schuster, Seitz, Weiß and Zickenheiner each receive a copy of this letter.

Sincerely yours,

Hanno Hurth (President of the Eurodistricts Region Freiburg – Center et Sud Alsace)
