Playoff time is the best and most intense time of the entire season for ice hockey players. With 9th place in the table, EHC Freiburg not only stayed up in the league, but also maintained the chance to play for the championship. But before that can happen, the first pre-playoff game against ESV Kaufbeuren was scheduled for today. Whoever of the two teams wins two of three games first is finally in the playoffs of the best eight teams.
Concentrated and slightly overweight, EHC Freiburg started the game against the Allgäu team. Both teams tested each other in the first third and tried to avoid mistakes. A penalty time on both sides was not used. That’s how it went in the second 20 minutes of the game.
Defender Hagen Kaisler had to go to the penalty box after five minutes, which the hosts were able to use to make it 1-0. Once in momentum, the Allgäu team made it 2-0 90 seconds later. There were no more goals in the middle section, although more penalties against both teams created opportunities.
The last third started extremely unfavorably for Freiburg. After a skirmish with a player from Kaufbeur, Hagen Kaisler had to go to the penalty box again for two minutes and so the Wolves started the first two minutes of the final section with one man less on the ice. However, the guests survived this precarious situation unscathed and in the 48th minute the hosts were hit twice as hard. Schütz and Spurgeon had to go into the cool box only 14 seconds apart and so the wolves had the chance to catch up with a double advantage.
Nikolas Linsemaier used this to make it 1:2 and shortly afterwards Simon Danner also managed to equalize. Now the hosts seemed shocked and Freiburg took control of the game afterwards. Three minutes before the end it was again Nikolas Linsemaier who gave his colors a 3:2 lead. This remained the case for the remaining minutes of the game, although another penalty against the wolves gave the hosts another chance to equalize. After the end of the game, the hosts received a game misconduct penalty for insulting the referees.
Already on Friday there is a second leg against the Allgäu, which will take place in Breisgau. EHC Freiburg can then end the series with a win and prepare for the next opponent Frankfurt or Dresden.
