Freiburg: Development work for the stadium in Freiburg has been completed – Suwonallee is now officially open to traffic

After a construction period of over 18 months, the development work for the new SC stadium has now been fully completed. These include Suwonallee as the most important access road to the stadium and at the same time the connecting axis between Madisonallee and Granadaallee, a pedestrian and cycle path along Suwonallee, the boulevard to the stadium, numerous parking spaces and a large bus station.

At today’s official opening of Suwonallee, Lord Mayor Martin Horn made it clear: “The opening of this important access road is one of the last milestones in the urban infrastructure here at the new SC stadium. The university campus, the north industrial area and the districts of Brühl and Mooswald will also benefit from this. In addition, the street is also a symbol of the connection between the city and the sports club and our twin city Suwon. “

The Achim-Stocker-Strasse surrounding the stadium is also already finished, but since it is currently still used as an access route for the adjacent university construction work, it will only be officially released and inaugurated at a later date.

At the two connections from Suwonallee to Madisonallee and Granadallee, traffic lights were set up. Extensive and sometimes difficult work was necessary, especially for the intersection on Granadaallee: at the end of 2018, the Wolfsbuck was cut over a length of 600 meters and supported with retaining walls. To make room for the new turning lanes, the old landfill body was also removed and also intercepted with supporting structures. Most of the material removed could be processed and reinstalled, so that only 10 percent of the earth’s mass had to be removed. In this way, calculated disposal costs could also be saved.

Building Mayor Martin Haag: “This is an excellent example of sustainable construction site and soil management. In this way, we prevented unnecessary traffic and kept costs significantly lower. It’s great what has been achieved here on the construction site over the past year and a half. I would like to thank everyone involved for this. “

The old pedestrian and cycle path along Granadaallee was left in its old location – so that pedestrians and cyclists can cross the new access road without crossing, a new bridge was built here, which was opened at the end of last year.

In addition to the access roads, the pedestrian boulevard to the stadium, numerous bicycle and car parking spaces and a large bus station were built. Trees will be planted and green areas will be created here until the end of November. Some of the parking spaces in the south of the stadium area are to be used as mobile home parking spaces on non-match days.

In addition, the connection to the Breisgau S-Bahn was established on the neighboring university campus with a pedestrian ramp.

The gardening and civil engineering department would like to take this opportunity to thank the local companies for their tireless efforts.
