Freiburg (dpa) – In the long-distance duel with 1. FC Union Berlin for the first qualification for the Champions League, Freiburg coach Christian Streich does not want to keep himself constantly up to date on the score in Berlin. “If something gets out of hand, I’ll find out – and I don’t want to know anything else,” said the 57-year-old before the end of SC Freiburg’s most successful season in the Bundesliga under him: “If Werder Bremen after five minutes is 3-0 down or 3-0 up, then they will say to me: ‘Listen, it looks like it right now.’ But don’t assume that.”
He himself will not look at his cell phone during the game on Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky) at Eintracht Frankfurt. “It’s still a matter of course that I don’t go out on the pitch with my cell phone in my pocket,” said the coach.
Before the season finale, Baden have 59 points in fifth place, like fourth-placed Union Berlin, but the goal difference is four goals worse. If they overtake the Köpenickers, the Breisgauers would play in the Champions League for the first time next season. Union Berlin meets Werder Bremen at the same time.
“If Union wins, then so be it. I can live with the form of defeat,” said Streich: “If we had 62 points, it would be four goals worse than fourth in the Bundesliga, then I wouldn’t go crazy Annoy. At some point you’ll be done with annoying and making claims, otherwise you’ll go insane at some point. I try to avoid that.” He assumes that Werder will play “with a big heart” and “great passion”.
