If it’s cold in winter, car enthusiasts turn up the heating. Normal behavior. However, some Tesla drivers in frosty Canada currently have to do without that because the heating does not work for them. The reason for this is likely a new component in Tesla’s electric cars.
The Tesla Model Y, released in March 2020, and the new 2021 version of the Model 3 are currently going through their first winter months. The vehicles, which are largely made from Tesla’s main plant in Fremont, California, are often said to be sun-drenched. There are repeated complaints that Tesla only takes limited consideration of drivers in the particularly cold regions of the world when designing its vehicles.
This prejudice appears to be confirmed in some recent cases in the Canadian province of Québec. The electromobility portal Electrek reports of many Tesla drivers where the heating in their Model 3 and Model Y simply failed in the cold Canadian winter.

One of the sources told Electrek that a brand new Model 3 was only driven for a week before the heating system stopped working. The lady said that Tesla took her car in for repairs and lent her another car. She was not told the cause of the problem, but was told that she probably won’t get her car back until January 11th.
That’s because the problem is currently widespread and Tesla’s service centers in Québec are busy working on many vehicles with the same problem, sources familiar with the matter said. In addition, Tesla forums and Facebook groups in colder regions like Québec are currently inundated with posts from Tesla owners who report the same problem with their heating system.

The cause of the problem is so far unclear – since the problem only affects Model Y and the new Model 3, it is reasonable to assume that it could have something to do with Tesla’s new heat pump system that is installed in the two electric vehicles. Since March of last year, Tesla has been using a new all-in-one system known as “Octovalve”, which combines all thermal processes such as heating and cooling processes. Originally, Tesla started with this technology in order to increase the efficiency of the Stromer by up to 10 percent, which according to the first reports is quite successful. The next few weeks will show to what extent the new component also brought new problems into the car.
