The red bricks of the North are frozen, frozen by freezing cold. Near Maubeuge (North), the thermometer reads -5 degrees. Few residents dare to venture outside. “I did not go out today”, admits a resident. When they leave school, the children try to warm up as best they can. “Me, I rub my hands and I put on a hat, a scarf”, explains a little girl. “I’m going to make snowmen and throw snowballs at my brother”, another fun.
A thin layer of snow covers the countryside, but also the roads. Temperatures continue to drop. In a few hours on Monday February 8, it will even be too cold to be able to clear snow. For the spreaders, a race against time begins. If the roads are not cleared of snow in the evening, the risk of ice the next day will be very high.
