Free woman of the Italian police who had been locked up by family for 22 years | NOW

A 67-year-old woman reportedly imprisoned for 22 years by her brother and sister-in-law in the Italian municipality of Bojano in the southern province of Campobasso was released by police. This was reported by the Italian press agency HANDLE.

In 1995 the woman moved with her brother so as not to be alone after the death of her husband. After a few years, apparently, her brother and sister-in-law had grown tired of living with the woman. They would then have locked her up in a room in a shed with no heating.

The woman is said to have received no medical treatment. She was also beaten and psychologically abused by her relatives. She was allowed to wash once a month in an old sink. Furthermore, she was rarely allowed out and never without the supervision of her relatives. She was not allowed to speak to anyone.

Police launched an investigation into the situation after receiving a tip a few months ago. During a house search, the carabinieri found the woman and took her to the station.

When the victim became convinced that she no longer needs to live with her relatives, she told her story. The woman now lives in a shelter.
