NEW YORK – Back to School is just around the corner in New York City and an organization is hosting a virtual panel in Spanish to answer questions from parents of students with disabilities about Back to School and how to get the necessary supports.

The panel organized by INCLUDEnyc will be held on August 17 and will include the participation of Araina Sepulveda-Moreiras, Deputy Director of Special Education translations and Daliz Vasquez, Director of Special Education, both from the Department of Education of the City of Nueva York. In addition, the event will have the participation of Dr. Judith Flores, pediatrician of NYC Health + Hospitals and Cruz Fuksman, community coordinator of the New York Psychotherapy and Counseling Center.

They will each talk about reopening schools, people who meet the criteria for the vaccine, translation and interpretation services in schools, and share free mental health resources.

“Students of color, Latino students, and English language learners with disabilities were disproportionately affected by the pandemic and their parents are likely to have more concerns about returning to face-to-face classes,” said Barbara Glassman, Executive Director of INCLUDEnyc. “We want to make sure families are aware of all the resources available to them, including interpretation or translation services for major special education documents, which allow parents to represent and advocate for their children.”

Language barriers can create communication problems and lack of knowledge of disability laws, educational rights and child development. The pandemic further exacerbated these inequalities and many families had to struggle to keep up with news, which was often published first in English, the organization said in a statement. An event that seeks to break down those barriers.

This virtual event will be in Spanish and there will be simultaneous interpretation in English.
