Free Webinars Offer Support to Stroke Patients in Meath

Stroke patients in Meath are invited to participate in a series of free webinars aimed at aiding their recovery. Organized by the Irish Heart Foundation, a national charity focused on stroke and heart health, the webinars will address critical topics related to fatigue, trauma, and personal recovery experiences.

Engaging Discussions and Expert Insights

The first webinar took place on World Stroke Day, October 29, where stroke survivor Dermot Berry shared his inspirational story of recovery following a spinal stroke in June 2018. After experiencing paralysis, Dermot has successfully regained his ability to walk and is now an active member of the Irish wheelchair basketball team.

On Wednesday, October 30, Gary Broderick, CEO of the SAOL Project and a trainer in motivational interviewing, will present on the practical aspects of Trauma-Informed Practice. This session will shed light on its importance in the recovery process, especially for those affected by trauma and addiction.

The series will continue on Thursday, October 31, with a presentation by Ciara Breen, Occupational Therapist Manager at Galway University Hospital. Ciara will focus on strategies for coping with fatigue, a common issue faced by stroke survivors and those living with heart conditions.

Resources for Stroke Patients

These webinars are designed to benefit not only patients but also family members and caregivers. The Irish Heart Foundation offers a variety of support services, including:

  • Stroke Connect Service for newly discharged patients
  • In-person stroke support meetings nationwide
  • Young Stroke Support Network
  • Creative therapy options like music and art therapy
  • Weekly online exercise sessions
  • A private Facebook group dedicated to life after a stroke

The Role of Physical Activity in Recovery

In conjunction with these talks, the Irish Heart Foundation emphasizes the lifelong benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle, particularly after a stroke. Helen Gaynor, Head of Community Support Services at the foundation, states, "Being active is one of the best things you can do for your health, especially in the aftermath of a stroke. Research shows positive outcomes for stroke survivors who exercise, which include improved physical function and enhanced mental well-being."

Helen adds, “Repetition is key and can significantly assist daily living skills—for instance, learning which arm to use when picking up groceries.”
