Free Renfe subscription: requirements, how to apply and where to get it

The free subscription is one of the new anti-crisis measures to deal with inflation. In this sense, all season tickets for the various Cercanías, Rodalíes and Media Distancia trips operated by Renfe will be discounted. It will be free from September 1st and will last until December 31st.

The Government’s objective is, as announced last June, to promote the use of collective public transport in daily compulsory mobility as “a safer, more reliable, comfortable, economical and sustainable means of transport than the private car”.

Registration on the Renfe website

From the On August 8, users can register on the website and applications of Renfe and Renfe Cercanías to prepare the necessary procedures for the purchase of season tickets from this Wednesday. Users who normally use Renfe tools will have already performed this step, as it involves logging data.

Deposit for payment

Renfe will request a deposit of 10 euros to acquire the bonds which will allow free travel on Cercanías trains between 1st September and 31st December, which will be returned if the user makes a minimum of trips.

To proceed with the return of the deposit, this will be made on the same payment method used by the user. Therefore, if the subscription was paid by card, it will be returned to the card and if it was made in cash, the refund must be requested at the box office. To get the money back, a minimum of 16 trips must be made during the established period.

These free passes will be valid in a single Cercanías hub and will allow you to travel across the entire network of this hub. They can be purchased on the Renfe website and app and at stations.

How to request a free subscription?

The deadline for requesting the free travel pass runs from 24 August. A measure which will benefit over 300,000 people who have already registered on the Renfe website.

The pass will be purchased for each Cercanías nucleus and will be valid for unlimited travel between any origin and destination. All customers will be able to get this subscription at ticket offices, vending machines and via the Renfe Cercanías appwith the exception of Asturias and Santander, where they can only be purchased physically.

The the app will generate a QR code that will be downloaded to your mobile and can be used to go directly through the turnstiles in the Cercanías hubs in Madrid, Málaga, Murcia / Alicante, Valencia and Zaragoza.

Also, it will create a seven-digit code with which the pass can be obtained in physical format or loaded onto the one already available to the customer at the ticket offices or self-service machines in the centers of Cadiz, San Sebastián, Bilbao, Seville and Barcelona.
