Free public transport on weekends in Clermont-Ferrand

The elected officials of the Syndicat Mixte des Transports en Commun of the Clermont conurbation (SMTC-AC) decided on October 21, 2021 that access to the T2C public transport network would be free every weekend from Saturday December 4, 2021. This measure is a 24-month experiment.

Free weekend access to the T2C network is possible for all users. Free access concerns public transport services, regular and on demand. No transport ticket is required to board. The transport offer is maintained identically.

The cost of this experiment is estimated at 2.1 million euros per year. This amount is covered by the Métropole Clermontoise, the city of Clermont-Ferrand and the SMTC-AC.

This free weekend is intended to promote public transport for travel to the city by overcoming parking constraints. The objective is also to enhance the attractiveness of the city center for shopping and leisure.

An assessment of the evolution of weekend attendance will be carried out in order to assess the impact of this measure. A strengthening of the transport offer could take place if it proves necessary in view of the observed attendance.

Elected officials have also decided not to increase public transport fares in 2022.

A developing public transport network

The Clermont-Ferrand public transport network will continue to develop. As part of the fourth call for projects for public transport on its own site and multimodal interchange hubs, the SMTC-AC obtained last October a subsidy of 21.59 million euros from the State to finance the BHLS B (12km) and C (17km). The total cost of the project amounts to 283 million euros.

Occasional free

As the end of year celebrations approach, other public transport networks are accessible free of charge on an ad hoc basis (e.g. certain Saturdays and/or Sundays before Christmas), such as in Annecy, Bourg-en-Bresse, Brest, Colmar, Saint-Nazaire… This measure aims to facilitate access to town center shops for the inhabitants of these towns.
