Free parking is gradually declining in Nice… We explain why and which neighborhoods will become chargeable

The parking meters win the districts of Nice. After Riquier, the Madeleine and Saint-Isidore, the Parc-Impérial will soon pass there. The municipality explains the reasons for this trend.

Saint-Isidore after La Madeleine and Riquier, soon the Parc-Impérial… Several new neighborhoods in Nice are or will switch to paid parking. Finding a place to park in Nice, a real pain that all users notice and know. This is one of the reasons that pushes the City to monetize this precious asset.

Rationalize uses

“Paid parking is a good solution, for many places, in order to regulate the situation”believes Gaël Nofri, Deputy Mayor for Traffic and Parking.

Thus the limited subscription per household allows in particular “the rationalization of uses”. A change which allows, for the chosen one, to fight against “the misuse of the public domain, in particular by certain professions.”

Gaël Nofri relies on studies conducted by the City: “A paid space will accommodate seven cars on average per day compared to three if it is free. In fact, the rotation is much better on paid parking. A greater number of users can benefit from it”. He also mentions “increased control” infringements (such as life-threatening sucker cars on certain lanes) made easier by the device.

Hills and residential spared

However, all on-street parking in the city is not intended to become paid. “The principle is that in high-density neighborhoods, this system is at the service of residents and businesses.” With a focus on the city centre, the port and the districts served by the tramway.

Gaël Nofri specifies that “it avoids the hills, the residential, where the roads do not allow it”. Car “you can only pay for parking that is legal”. So the town hall “module, both with the configuration of the premises and the local economic fabric”.

The elected official also affirms that, if at the Madeleine it is the town hall which decided it, paid parking is generally established at the request of the inhabitants, after a public consultation by including them in the process. “Regulating parking was a strong request from merchants and residents to avoid suction cup cars and allow customers to park to do their shopping in our businesses”recently defended Maurice Tornesi, chairman of the St. Isidore neighborhood committee.

Other neighborhoods soon to be paid?

Similarly, the municipality would thus have been “solicited” to Pasteur, without the first exchanges making it possible to identify a clear and asserted will. The question is also asked in Cimiez and Nice-Nord.

Another reflection is underway around Parc Chambrun and in “those places that serve as a park and ride on the surfaceanalyzes Gaël Nofri. People park their vehicles there all day rather than going to the park and ride and taking the tram. We have a lot of buffer cars, which stay there for the week. It is one of the solutions that can be drawn up if the Gorbella car park is not enough.”

However, the town hall denies wanting to “make money” so the 11,700 parking meters in Nice brought the City 5.7 million euros in 2019 (Nice morning of Saturday). The fines collected by the Metropolis for non-payment or exceeding the timetable amounted to nearly 6 million that same year. In total, the parking meters would thus bring in nearly 12 million euros to local authorities.
