Passing through Bastia or forced to turn daily in search of a place to go to work? A brief overview of the sectors of Bastia where parking is not subject to paid regulations. In these busy areas, first come, first parked.

Immediately released, immediately taken. Every day, the same ballet of cars plays out in the heart of the city. At a time when residents are leaving their parking spaces, working people are looking to park to reach their place of work. There are those who turn for long minutes, from one street to another, in the hope of finding the free square, and those who, henceforth, trace in the direction of the good map of the city.

Rue Miot.Christian Buffa

Objective: to be the first to arrive.

Who are these users that we often cross in a hurry, when offices and shops open? They are part of the 14,100 people who live in outlying municipalities and who travel daily to Bastia to work or study, as confirmed by a recent INSEE study. And for the latter, the most economical solution remains free parking.

It is therefore not towards the five paying car parks in the city that they put their flashing lights but on these spaces which are still accessible without having to pay the 1€ per hour or the 4€ per day for visitors. “If I can avoid paying to go to work, it’s still better”says a passerby. “It’s easy. I have my habits. Every morning, I park my car in the school car park and go to my office”, add a second.

Note that the whole of the city is free between noon and 2 p.m., then after 7 p.m. This also applies to Sundays and public holidays, but it is less of a concern for employees. The latter, forced to take the car, then have several options. A brief overview, map of the city in hand, in search of good plans.

Rue Vallée du Fango.Christian Buffa

In the city center: head for the Fango valley

On Avenue Jean-Zucarrelli, nearly 220 places are accessible without having to go through the parking meter. As part of the study of the global travel plan (PGD) conducted by the urban community of Bastia (Cab) in 2021, for a time, it had been imagined to subject them to paid regulations. However, this hotly disputed track seems abandoned.

Along the road – on the Montepiano ramp – which leads from the Fango roundabout to the administrative court, a row of squares is accessible.

It is also not excluded that other projects flourish in this district.

To the north of the city: the Toga district and its avenues

Since 2014, the former Toga tax car park, located between the Charpak school and near the former hospital, has offered 300 spaces. After 9 am it is often full. Do not hesitate, then, to sink towards the lower platform to try your luck. The plus: the parking area is linked to the heart of the city by shuttles, which are also free.

The other solution is the parking area located near the Giant of Toga. More than 150 places are accessible with a fairly flexible turnover allowing you to find a place at different times of the day.

By parking in this sector connected on one side to avenue Émile-Sari or boulevard Gaudin, users will have to finish their journey on foot. Allow just 10 minutes from Toga to Boulevard Paoli. In this northern part of the city, in total, nearly 450 places would be available. And this, without counting the places on the surface. Rue Eugène-Leschi, Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, Commandant l’Herminier, Empress-Eugenie or Boulevard Graziani are totally free. For its part, rue Luce-de-Casabianca also benefits from a double line, more or less authorized.

In these sectors, places are highly coveted. And if, for traders, they can have an attraction for customers, some regret the long-term parking of certain residents.

Rue Couvent St-François.Christian Buffa

In the heart of town: the Saint-François convent

Backing onto the Saint-François convent, this parking area is accessible 24 hours a day and has around a hundred spaces available. Parking is limited to four consecutive days to avoid the phenomenon of sucker cars. Also follow, rue Saint-François.

By zooming in, this time, on the free arteries, there remain the streets perpendicular to boulevard Paoli and rue César-Campinchi: rue général-Abbatucci. On the side of the Old Port, rue Laurent-Casanova remains free.

Depending on the time slots and days, and provided you have time to search, it is still possible to park in town without having to pay a single euro. More than 1,000 places have thus been identified. The counterpart is sometimes to agree to walk. This list is not exhaustive and certain “small addresses” are voluntarily kept secret by the users encountered. And when free places are lacking, there remains the surface paying car park which represents 978 places.

According to a recent study delivered by the municipal police services, in comparison with municipalities in the same strata, “Bastia would be one of the cities in France where parking is the cheapest”. To be compared.
