The Oncological Institute “Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuţă” from Cluj-Napoca (IOCN) implements the project “Be responsible for your health – regional programs for prevention, early detection, diagnosis and early treatment of cervical cancer – stage II – North West Region “, SMIS Code: 140501. Project co-financed from the EUROPEAN SOCIAL FUND through the Human Capital Operational Program 2014-2020

The program is addressed to all women aged between 24 and 64 living in any of the counties of the North West region (Bihor, Bistriţa-Năsăud, Cluj, Maramureş, Sălaj and Satu Mare) insured or uninsured.

What is HPV?

HPV is the virus that causes an infection transmitted through sexual contact, known as Human Papilloma Virus (English) or Human Papilloma Virus (Romanian). Most sexually active people can become infected at some point in their lives.

There are over 100 types of HPV. These types are either low-risk and can cause genital warts (condylomata), or high-risk, in which case they can cause precancerous lesions of the cervix, which, if not detected and treated in time, can slowly develop into uterine cervical cancer.

What are the symptoms of HPV infection?

HPV infection has no symptoms. Most HPV infections clear up spontaneously and heal on their own, especially in young women, but in some cases, HPV infection becomes persistent and can cause lesions, genital warts (condylomas) or precancerous lesions. The types of HPV that cause warts are different from the types of HPV that can cause cancer.

In order to detect HPV infection, it is important that women get tested periodically.

Is there treatment for HPV infection?

There is no treatment for HPV infection, but there is treatment for the negative effects that the infection has on health. Genital warts (condylomata) can be removed. Left untreated they can multiply or increase in size. Precancerous lesions of the cervix can be treated by different methods depending on the indications of your doctor. Thus, you remove the risk of cervical cancer.
