“Mannheim Kinokult Open Air” is moving: After five years at the ALTER event area on the Alter Meßplatz, the open-air experience will now take place at a new location from August 13 to September 3.

The popular “Mannheim Kinokult Open Air” opens its doors on the lawn of the Neumarkt in Neckarstadt-West. From August 13 to September 3, 2024, cinema fans will have the opportunity to experience award-winning films from, about and for Mannheim on a big screen on four Tuesday evenings. The event is presented by film guests and the Mannheim arthouse cinemas. But there are even more open-air cinemas in the region this summer.

Free admission on the lawn of the Neumarkt in Neckarstadt-West

The Mannheim Cultural Office and the Neckarstadt-West district management are making the open-air cinema series possible for the sixth time in cooperation with the Neckarstadt community center. The films are shown at dusk from 8:30 p.m. Up to 99 visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the screening in the open air. Admission is free and seat reservations are not possible.

“The changes at the Alter Meßplatz have not prevented us from continuing this original, communal cinema event in Neckarstadt-West. Last year alone, it delighted a diverse audience of more than 1,000 people and continues to offer surprising new perspectives on our city, its people and our film scene,” says a delighted Thorsten Riehle, Cultural Mayor of the City of Mannheim.

Picnic blankets expressly permitted at the open-air cinema

“We are excited to see how the new venue on Neumarkt will be received and hope that the program will attract lots of people out into the fresh air,” says Jennifer Pohl, district manager of Neckarstadt-West, who invites people to bring picnic blankets. Ewa Wojciechowska, head of the cultural office, is pleased about the new location and hopes for future-oriented development of the film series in the Neckarstadt district.

This time the film evenings are themed “Mannheim Hochtief”. “Film itself offers a rollercoaster of emotions, stories and images. We were surprised at how many different interpretations the topic of Hochtief can have, whether in architectural, historical, social or psychological terms,” says curator and film scholar Dr. Morticia Zschiesche, who will be the moderator of the four evenings.
