Are you in the process of learning English or do you want to improve it? Universidad Anáhuac, recognized by QS World University Rankings as one of the best universities in Mexico, offers three free online English courses.
The university joined the edX platform, founded by Harvard and MIT, to “transform traditional education, removing barriers of cost, location and access.”
To take one of these courses you must create an account and register for free on the platform https://authn.edx.org/register. They will ask you for information about your email, full name, username, password and country of residence.
English courses at the University of Anáhuac are free of charge, as long as you do not request the certificate. Also, keep in mind that you will have some limited materials. If you want a certificate upon completion or a grade in your exams, then you will have to pay a fee.
The English pronunciation course is aimed at people who need to improve their pronunciation, but also their confidence when speaking English, because it all starts there.
“In your daily and work life, perhaps you have faced situations where your accent when speaking English has been the cause of a lack of confidence, or has even led to communication problems, and you do not understand why your English does not sound like on the BBC. If you identified yourself, this content was created for you,” they note on the website.
Students will learn the principles of English phonology and, by understanding why it sounds the way it does, they will begin to put their learning into practice. They will also be placed in environments where they can gain confidence to ensure clear and effective communication.
Professor David John Phillips says that there are sounds in English that are not used in Spanish, which is why he addresses the role of phonetic symbols used in most English dictionaries.
“You will see how phonological stress works in English words and you will understand how it influences the rhythm of English speech,” he notes, adding that many times the sounds of words change when put together in sentences.
“You will understand how the rhythm of spoken English is produced, how it differs from Spanish, and how you will be able to reproduce it,” he explains.
The Anáhuac University course is designed for people whose native language is Spanish. It is a requirement to have a basic level of English (written) to focus only on pronunciation. This course is aimed at basic level students interested in improving their conversation skills to be able to relate when networking in business and work.
“In your daily and work life, you have surely faced situations where you have to read, understand or speak English and you find yourself at a crossroads when you do not feel able to do it effectively. If you felt identified, the course was created for you,” they note.
Their instructors ensure that upon completing the online course, students will perform better when speaking in English, since their methodology includes exercises that encourage the connection between meanings, situations and repetition, facilitating communication in this language.
“You will learn to communicate orally and in writing in the English language, effectively to apply in your daily and work life. You will be able to express facts and opinions with confidence and you will expand your English vocabulary with around 50-60 words per week,” they note.
The English course at Universidad Anáhuac promises to provide the skills necessary to excel at work.
“This online English course will provide you with basic linguistic and conversational skills for the business world, allowing you to communicate effectively with bosses, colleagues and staff at work, such as listening and analyzing before speaking, posing correctly make a presentation, lead a meeting or close a deal,” they point out on their website.
Upon completion, students are expected to be able to communicate their knowledge proactively.
According to the syllabus, you will learn to write professional texts in English, such as emails, interviews, resumes, memos, minutes, among others. They will also teach you oral expressions that will make it easier for you to make presentations.
