Anyone in the Netherlands who wants to can choose their own modem or router from Friday with an internet subscription. on January 28 enters a policy rule which states that consumers and companies should be allowed to choose a modem or router themselves and that the telecom provider has no right to prohibit this. In other words: free modem choice is a fact. But what does free modem choice actually mean, how did we get here, what do providers do and what does it benefit you as an end user?
The Enforcement Decree End Devices policy rule was published last summer by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets. The policy rule describes exactly which part of the network the user has free choice. It also generally states what information telecom operators must publish so that consumers know which routers and modems are suitable for the network.
