In a move to bolster access to justice for vulnerable residents, the Public Mediator of Burgas, Adv. Todor Stamboliev,and the Chairman of the burgas Bar Association,Adv. Yuriy Boshnakov, signed a cooperation agreement on December 5th, the eve of Burgas’s holiday.
This agreement marks the first step in a commitment by the Burgas Bar Association, following a decision by the Burgas Municipal Council on November 26, 2024, to support the construction of a Lawyer’s House in the city. “A signed agreement is the first step,” the statement read.
Expanding access to Legal Aid
the collaboration between the Public Mediator and the Burgas Bar Association will focus on providing free legal aid to individuals eligible under bulgaria’s Law on Legal Aid. This partnership will leverage jointly administered regional counseling centers to ensure vulnerable citizens and those lacking financial resources have access to legal depiction.
“Through the created regional counseling centers administered jointly with the national legal aid office will be provided free protection of our vulnerable fellow citizens and those who do not have the means to provide legal assistance,” the statement explained.
Specifically, the initiative will benefit: socially disadvantaged individuals; those utilizing social or integrated health and social services; pregnant women and mothers at risk; children in foster care or with relatives; children at risk; victims of domestic or sexual violence, or human trafficking who lack resources for legal protection; individuals seeking or receiving international protection; and disabled persons receiving monthly support whose income is insufficient to afford legal counsel.
