Free interrail for Norwegian 18-year-olds – Latest news – NRK

Free interrail for Norwegian 18-year-olds

The EU gives away thousands of free train tickets to 18-year-olds every year. Now Norwegian young people will also be able to take part in the scheme.

The purpose is to contribute to cultural exchange across national borders.

– Train travel across national borders will create unity and friendship, and from this year Norway will also be involved. We are pleased that this initiative now also includes Norwegian young people, says Wenche Mobråten, division director in the Directorate for Children, Youth and Families (Bufdir).

The “DiscoverEU” ticket competition is part of the Erasmus + program. In total, the EU distributes 70,000 tickets, and 760 of these are reserved for young people in Norway.

– 18-year-olds in Norway have now lived through two years of shutdown and pandemic, and Bufdir knows very well how demanding it has been. We hope many 18-year-olds take advantage of this opportunity, now that society has opened up, says Mobråten.

The first ticket competition is open between 7 and 21 April. The next round opens on October 4, 2022. Participants must be resident in Norway and must be 18 years old when traveling.

The competition involves answering five short multiple-choice questions and one guessing question. Those who guess closest, win, while the rest end up on the waiting list. You can sign up alone or with a maximum of four friends. If you live far from a train station, for example in northern Norway, you also get paid to travel to the nearest train station.
