REGIO | Time is running out for those who have not yet gotten a free HPV shot, but want to. The GGD says: “Young adults born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2003 have until June 1, 2024 to complete their vaccination series for free. The complete series consists of two injections, five months apart.” For those who get the first injection in 2023, the second injection in the first half of 2024 is now also free.
The GGD continues: “To be protected against HPV for the long term, you need two injections. And there must be at least 150 days (five months) between those two injections. After June 1, 2024, the HPV vaccination for young adults will no longer be free. Will you get the first injection after 2023? Then you can only get the second injection after June 1, 2024 and you have to pay for it yourself. This costs approximately 175 euros per injection. After getting the first injection, you will automatically receive a message from the GGD about six months later to make an appointment for the second injection. Figures from the RIVM and the GGD show that young men in particular are delaying the second injection. However, the advice is not to wait unnecessarily long.”
With or without an appointment
This year, young adults born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2003 can still register via hpvafspraak.nl schedule an appointment at the GGD. In this region you can also visit the vaccination locations in Eindhoven (Antoon Coolenlaan) and Helmond (Fletcher Welness Hotel, Scheepsboulevard 2) without an appointment. Keep for the current opening hours and locations in 2024.
Against six types of cancer
“HPV is a highly contagious and common virus, with which eight out of ten people become infected,” says the GGD. “Usually the body clears the virus itself, but sometimes it remains in the cells for longer and (a pre-stage of) cancer can develop after years. This can involve cancer in the mouth and throat, the penis, anus, vagina, labia and cervix. The vaccination protects against these six types of cancer and in 2022 it was offered for the first time to boys in addition to girls. Every year, an estimated 1,500 people in the Netherlands develop cancer due to HPV, approximately 1,100 women and approximately 400 men.”
