Students from Hogeschool Utrecht, Utrecht University and Utrecht MBO institutions can get a free vaccine against the human papillomavirus (HPV) in March. This is possible at a temporary vaccination location of the GGD region of Utrecht at the Utrecht Science Park (USP).
HPV is the abbreviation for human papillomavirus. This virus is contagious and sexual transferable. Eight out of ten people come into contact with the contagious HPV. According to the GGD, you do not always get sick from an infection, because in many cases the body clears the virus itself. If the virus has damaged many cells, cancer can develop later. Each year, approximately 1,100 women and 400 men develop cancer from HPV.
With an HPV vaccination you can protect yourself against six types of cancer. The most The most common form of cancer caused by HPV is cervical cancer. HPV can also cause other cancers, such as cancers of the anus, penis, vagina, labia, and in the mouth and throat. For good protection you need two vaccinations with at least five months in between.
Vaccinate without an appointment
This year there is a catch-up vaccination campaign against HPV for men and women born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2003. For example, men who have not been invited before, and women who have not been vaccinated or have been partially vaccinated, will still have the opportunity to be vaccinated.
Students can visit the USP library building without an appointment on 9, 10, 14 and 15 March between 10 am and 5 pm. In addition to the location at Utrecht Science Park, the GGD region of Utrecht offers the HPV vaccine at four other vaccination locations in the region: Amersfoort, Utrecht, Veenendaal and Woerden.
