Sofia Introduces Crisis Accommodation Center to Support Families in Need
In a landmark decision, the Sofia City Council (SOC) has approved a groundbreaking proposal by Mayor Vasil Terziev to establish a Center for Crisis Accommodation of persons and Families. This initiative aims to provide temporary shelter and comprehensive support to individuals and families who have lost their homes due to disasters, accidents, or other emergencies.
The proposal was spurred by the tragic Bankya incident, where a family was left homeless following a gas installation explosion. The new center will offer free housing for up to two years, with properties being repaired and equipped to ensure normal living conditions.
“With the introduction of this service, we show that Sofia can be a city that offers adequate assistance at critical times. It is indeed not just about shelter, but about real support for restoration and returning to normal life,” said Mayor Vasil Terziev.
The initiative aligns with the pilot project for crisis support announced by Deputy Mayor Nadezhda Bacheva on January 30. Bacheva emphasized that the service is designed to provide more than just temporary housing. “Our goal is to give the affected not just a temporary home, but an opportunity to step back and move on,” she explained. The Center for Crisis Accommodation is set to begin operations on February 1, 2025. The Sofia Municipality has committed the necessary resources to ensure its effective functioning, with a sustainable model that guarantees long-term support for those in crisis situations.
