Electricity in Oslo and one of the largest cities in the country – Bergen, is free today due to the huge amount of rainfall, reports the specialized news site “Europower”, quoted by France Press and BTA.
The price of electricity in the country depends on rainfall, as it is mainly produced by hydroelectric plants.
Storm Hans, which hit Scandinavia in August, as well as heavy summer rains in general, filled the dams almost to capacity, says AFP.
As a result, the spot price per kilowatt, before taxes and network charges, in Oslo and Bergen today varies between 0 and -0.3 kroner (-0.03 euro cents). A negative price means that companies must pay consumers to sell their output.
Electricity producers admit that it is better for them to produce when prices are even negative than to take measures to stop production, specifies “Europower”.
But even if the spot price is slightly in the red in some regions of the country, companies continue to collect amounts related to green electricity certificates in their accounts.
